All About Wendell Phillips

Wendel Phillips was a wealthy person who went to Harvard law school and worked at a law firm. One day in the early eighteen hundreds, he witnessed a mob on the streets and was very disturbed by this. He later would become one of the most controversial and popular orator of the anti slavery movement. He dropped his job and risked his ways and social appearance to fight and become an abolitionist. He became friends with another popular abolitionist named William Lloyd Garrison. So he started lecturing and creating info packets for anti slavery in Williams news, The liberator. He became one of the best speakers and writers and became a very important person in the anti slavery movement. He was so passionate that he even supported the idea of conceding from the union. His orator started in Boston in 1837 when lots of people were brought together to meet after the murder of abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy. He spoke a very passionate speech about the brutal mob and people loved it. This is one of the reasons he has become known as one of the best orators of his time. Wendell was never really political and refused to define himself on either side especially with people who were supportive of slaves. Overall he had impacted the anti slavery movement in a great way and helped so many people along the way.
